Supporting mums through every part of motherhood
Pregnancy, birth and becoming a mum are often described as some of life’s happiest moments. But for many women, this time can also bring significant emotional and mental health challenges.
Around 1 in 10 women experience depression or another mental health condition during pregnancy, with even more affected in the months following birth. When these challenges go unrecognised or untreated, they can affect a mother’s ability to cope with everyday life, connect with her baby and care for herself and her family.
For a community like Eastland – where mums and families are such an important part of everyday life – it’s a reminder that behind every parenting journey is a different experience.
Support is available
Postpartum depression can affect either parent, and signs can include persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, difficulty concentrating, low energy, changes in appetite or feeling disconnected from your baby.
The important message from Eastern Health is that treatment is available. With timely support, compassionate care and access to appropriate services, women can recover and thrive.
Eastern Health provides a range of services throughout the perinatal period, including antenatal clinics, maternity services and its Perinatal Emotional Health Service (PEHS). PEHS is a free service providing treatment for referred women from pregnancy through to their baby’s first birthday where there are significant perinatal mental health concerns that have not responded to other supports.
